Project date:

In 2007 for the purpose of decrease in operating costs, ensuring business continuity and increase in flexibility at deployment of new IT services in JSC Samaraenergo the project on creation and implementation in a data processing center of virtual infrastructure was implemented. It was executed based on VMware Infrastructure 3 technology, Blade servers and the Fujitsu-Siemens Computers disk array. During the project functioning of the majority of computing resources of the company was transferred to virtual environment.

The operating experience of virtual infrastructure within three years showed high efficiency and reliability. The important role in it was played by the VMware vCenter Server system providing centralized operation with virtual environment.

But business processes of the company made more and more strict requirements to reliability, availability and security of IT infrastructure. In addition over time there was a need of implementation of new information systems that demanded the corresponding upgrade.

Before specialists of Open Technologies company there was a problem of integration of additional computing powers into DPC (that would give the chance of deployment of new IT services), expansions of functionality of virtual environment for the purpose of increase in fault tolerance and efficiency of use of the server hardware and also updating of the existing virtual infrastructure without termination of work of the productive systems.

In work flow on the project works on a commissioning of new Fujitsu Technology Solutions Blade servers and their integration into virtual infrastructure of DPC were performed; migration of the existing virtual infrastructure on the VMware vSphere 4 platform and updating of VMware vCenter Server is provided; setup of the services providing runtime allocation of resources of infrastructure and high availability of virtual machines is performed. In addition in the modernized virtual environment the cluster of terminal servers based on the Microsoft Windows Server 2008 operating system was unrolled.

According to the Chief information officer of JSC Samaraenergo Andrey Repkin, "this project is for us the next natural stage in general strategy of development of infrastructure of IT which cornerstone the demands made by the current and perspective business processes of the company are".

"In addition to adding in the existing virtual infrastructure of essentially new characteristics significantly increasing its availability and controllability we could bring closer on a step the customer to a possibility of transfer of computing resources on Wednesday of "cloud" calculations and minimization of cost of creation and support of own hardware-software platforms" — the manager with corporate customers of the company told Open Technologies Glushchenko Maxim.
