The national park stretches over 23,000 hectares and contains 65% of all the Abies pinsapo forests existing on the Iberian Peninsula, a species of fir unique to southern Spain and northern Morocco. The most famous example is Pinsapo de las Escaleretas, declared a national monument.
In addition to endemic plants, in 2021 golden eagles, Bonelli eagles, beech marten, roe deer and otters, as well as local species of river crayfish live here.
Geographically, the park extends through the municipalities of Benahavis, El Burgo, Istan, Monda, Parauta, Rhonda, Tolox and Juncker, although its zone of influence extends to seven other places that are considered part of the biosphere reserve.
