On July 15, 2021, it was reported that Johnson & Johnson was withdrawing defective sun sprays that could cause cancer. The company recalls Aveeno and Neutrogena aerosol sunscreens after internal assays of samples revealed the presence of benzene, a known carcinogen.

On July 14, 2021, Johnson & Johnson said consumers should stop using these funds and discard. The following aerosol sunscreens came under review: Neutrogena Beach Defense, Neutrogena Cool Dry Sport, Neutrogena Invisible Daily, Neutrogena Ultra Sheer and Aveeno Protect + Refresh.

Benzene is an industrial chemical, it is usually contained in crude oil and cigarette smoke, which can also be used in the production of plastics and pesticides, it is also a known carcinogen that can cause harm to humans during prolonged exposure, namely exposure for more than 1 year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the United States.

The company said benzene is not an ingredient in any of its sunscreens, and that the company is investigating the cause of the contamination. Their representatives did not specify how much benzene was found, there was only a formulation like a low level.

Earlier in 2021, Valisure, an independent pharmaceutical company, discovered that 78 batches of sunscreens and skin care products contained benzene, a well-known carcinogen that is associated with blood cancer and other diseases. Of the 78 batches in which benzene was detected, a significantly increased level of benzene was found in 40 products.

Johnson & Johnson said consumers can get help resolving issues or demand a refund.[1]
