2021: Implementation of an automated system to prevent personnel from being in a hazardous area

In the coke-chemical production of the Magnitogorsk Metallurgical Plant, the use of modern digital technologies increases the safety of production processes and reduces the impact of dangerous and harmful factors. This became known on August 5, 2021.

On coke batteries No. 7-8, experimental and industrial operation of an automated system for preventing personnel from being in the hazardous area began. The project on personnel control in hazardous areas is based on industrial Internet of things and machine vision technologies. Coke-repellent machines are equipped with special sensors for tracking the employee's entry into hazardous areas, and workers - with personal RFID tags. If a person enters a danger zone at the time of movement of the machine, he receives a vibration signal on a radio mark, and on a coke machine, a light and sound alarm is turned on, followed by blocking the mechanisms of the machine. A system that prevents the appearance of personnel in the immediate vicinity of working equipment will help preserve the life and health of workers, reduce the risk of accidents and violations of labor protection rules.

The general contractor of the project was MMP-Informservice LLC. According to the developers, this is the first such system in the metallurgical industry. Upon completion of test tests of the system on 7-8 coke batteries, the project will be scaled at other units of the coke shop.

the project is implemented in accordance with the program of measures to eliminate traumatic sites at workplaces. Thanks to an automated safety system based on machine vision technology and the installation of digital controls, we expect a decrease in injury hazard and a decrease in the number of accidents at work. Similar systems that automatically block mechanisms when people get into hazardous areas are also planned to be installed in blast furnace, oxygen-converter and electric steel smelting shops, "said Grigory Schurov.
