2021: Announcement of a CT scanner with an AI system that adjusts the device for each patient
On September 21, 2021, GE Healthcare introduced the Revolution Ascend CT system with the Effortless Workflow AI function. The device has a wide aperture of gentry (75 cm) and a low table position, which is convenient for patients with a high body mass index, as well as for people with all kinds of injuries. Another feature is personalized settings, including radiation dose and image quality, for each particular patient.
The most time-consuming part of CT is not the survey itself, but the actions that occur after it. Within the typical 10-30 min intake, the scan itself takes only a few minutes, and the rest of the time is devoted to patient preparation, including patient positioning and determining the correct protocols and settings, as well as image recovery and report preparation. Historically, these processes were performed manually, which put them at risk of human error; however, AI offers new opportunities for automating business processes and accelerating examinations with the same or better results, "said Timothy P. Shchikutovich, Director of Clinical Operations and Draft CT Protocol. |
Revolution Ascend helps solve these problems with Effortless Workflow. It all begins with the fact that the technologist, using a barcode reader connected to the system, scans the patient's map or tag and personalizes each study: automatically pulls up information about the patient and offers appropriate protocols. By pressing the button, the CT technologist can trigger an automatic positioning function that uses real-time depth detection technology to create a 3D model of the patient's body and a deep learning algorithm to determine the correct table lift and stand movement to align the center of the scan range with the hole isocenter. When a patient is ready to scan, intelligent tools built into the new Clarity operator environment provide optimal scan range, dose, and image quality settings for each patient, helping to improve efficacy and personalize medicine across all areas of clinical care.
The manufacturer lists the following benefits of Effortless Workflow:
- Positioning of patients with 94% autocentration accuracy within +/- 2 cm;
- Offers protocols with 90% accuracy;
- Automate and accelerate workflows with 66% clicks reduction;
- Save 56% time on scan settings and 21% on the whole study;
- Reduction of image noise up to 91% at the same radiation dose;
- Improve spatial resolution up to 2 times with the same image quality.[1]
