2021: Mobile App Controlled Inhaler Announcement

At the end of September 2021, BreatheSuite announced the release of the V1 smart metering inhaler. Information from the device can also be transmitted remotely so that physicians can monitor and advance an individual treatment plan for each patient.

BreatheSuite V1 converts existing inhalers into metered-dose inhaler (MDI) by automatically monitoring and providing feedback on inhaler compliance and inhalation techniques for people with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The device has a one-time portable battery-powered MDI add-in and a mobile application based on behavior change strategies.

The BreatheSuite system is connected to the top of the inhaler cartridge, and the device, in combination with a mobile application, can evaluate and score for the technique of using the inhaler by the patient. Results are stored in the cloud so that the patient can track and use the information to improve inhaler use.

Smart inhalers are expected to play a valuable role in improving therapy by 2026. More than half of patients using inhalers receive insufficient drugs and suffer from poor disease control. By measuring the inhaled air profile as well as the point of drug release, this pattern is greatly improved.

By being able to track patients digitally and provide feedback in real time, we hope to improve health outcomes. In addition, having an objective assessment of adherence and reception technique from every asthma and COPD user will advance the field of knowledge on the efficacy of inhalation drugs, said Chief Research Officer Meshari Alwashmi.

The BreatheSuite V1 device is compatible with 90% of metering inhalers introduced until September 29, 2021 on the entire market. It does not interfere with the regular use of MDI and can be removed and reattached to new inhalers.[1]
