2021: Mishustin approved the creation of a national registry of virus strains

On October 4, 2021, the Government of the Russian Federation announced the creation of the National Catalog of Collectible Strains of Pathogenic Microorganisms and Viruses. The corresponding resolution was signed by Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin.

It is assumed that this catalog will become a single national base in which all information about bacteria and viruses causing acute diseases will be kept and constantly updated.

The State Scientific Center for Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology, subordinate to Rospotrebnadzor, will create and maintain a national catalog of pathogens. Rospotrebnadzor itself is authorized to exercise control in this area, the press service of the Cabinet reports.

He noted that this will be a single, constantly updated database of all types of bacteria and viruses that can cause diseases in humans, animals or plants.

According to the approved rules, the material and technical support of the pathogen collection should include laboratory equipment, consumables and reagents, ensuring the biological safety and physical protection of pathogen collections, information and technical support for collection activities and maintaining the infrastructure of the premises in which pathogens are worked with.

The implementation of this project will be carried out as part of the federal law "On Biological Safety" adopted in December 2020[1][2]
