2021: Implement Commvault Complete Data Protection

On October 14, 2021, Commvault announced a successful project at CoStar Group, where it optimized backups and ensured data protection within its infrastructure.

As of October 2021, CoStar has 75 offices in 13 countries and more than 5,000 employees. CoStar leads the market for information on commercial real estate, analytics and online trading platforms.

Backup solutions used have become very difficult to handle exponentially growing data volumes. In the company's five infrastructure, DPC backup was required, VMware-, SQLservers file servers and, it Microsoft Exchange was necessary to ensure replication between data centers and (), Amazon Web Services AWS to make more than 3,000 backups daily, a total of 133 TB for 700 clients.

Every day, "fires were extinguished," said Alexis Oje, senior systems engineer at CoStar Group. "That's literally all I've been doing for about two years. And I had no confidence in our ability to protect company data.

A team of IT professionals CoStar began searching for another data management solution with a solution overview from the Gartner Magic Quadrant. Three quadrant leaders participated in the competition. And only Commvault Complete Data Protection was able to meet the requirements of CoStar backup.

We saw how easy it is to create a quick backup, "said Alexis Oje. - With Commvault, you can manage everything in one window at a time.

To implement Commvault Complete Data Protection, the CoStar team used Commvault Professional Services. Together, an algorithm for protecting a very segmented CoStar network was developed. The company now replicates backups across multiple data centers. They back up file servers directly in the cloud using Amazon Web Services (AWS) and additionally send backup copies to the cloud. For some critical resources, CoStar stores tapes locally.

With Commvault dashboards and reports, IT CoStar quickly gain insight into critical factors such as data growth, license usage, and inactive customers. Using this data, the command can move resources or stop backing up machines that are no longer in use.

After the transition to Commvault, CoStar achieved an increase in backup success rate from 55% to 97%. The company also reduced 11.2 petabytes of data to 2 petabytes of disk space through deduplication.

RTO decreased from 24 hours to one hour for disk and less than four hours for tape. However, the most noticeably implemented decision influenced the working day of Alexis Oje. Instead of six hours a day, it spends an hour or less to troubleshoot storage problems, and sometimes it has nothing to fix.
