2021: PX-Backup 2.1
On October 18, 2021, Pure Storage announced the release of PX-Backup 2.1. This is an updated version of the platform for modern applications designed for data storage and protection. Also, Portworx developers presented data from their survey, which helped them study user opinions about the prospects of status-tracking applications implemented on Kubernetes.
According to the company, the latest updates implemented in PX-Backup will provide the company (whether it works in a local environment or in the cloud) with comprehensive data protection, mobility when working with several cloud services and optimize compatibility support for Kubernetes applications. The following improvements were implemented:
- Ability to move applications between clouds. The PX-Backup platform allows you to migrate applications between any cloud or local data centers. Working with its latest version, customers will be able to create Kubernetes application backpacks in one cloud or data center and restore them in any other.
- Optimized storage compatibility with "3-2-1" backup policy. The "3-2-1" rule is the industry standard for any data protection plan. By following it, you can ensure data recovery even in the event of several consecutive failures. The updated PX-Backup platform now allows you to upload backpacks from CSI snapshots to block storage. If the company has placed its Kubernetes applications in Portworx PX-Store, cloud-based or any CSI-compatible storage system, then PX-Backup can store three copies of data (production, snapshot, and backpack) in both disk and block storage. This approach provides the flexibility to store data on alienable media, that is, in any cloud, while allowing you to follow the "3-2-1" rule.
- Advanced recovery with Shared File Storage support. If your company previously had the ability to back up loads as block data, it is now possible to create backpacks and restore applications that use permanent ReadWriteMany access mode (RWX) volumes. These volumes can be provided as shared file resources c, FlashBlade Portworx proxies, or any NFS server.
- Optimized protection with PX-Secure technology. PX-Backup users can now not only manage role-based access, but also use Portworx PX-Secure encryption services. In both cases, they will be able to implement an additional layer of security for their modern applications and reduce management costs.
Kubernetes continues to help optimize the flexibility and resilience of companies that intend to upgrade their applications and infrastructure. The company conducted an end-user survey among 500 IT professionals in the United States and the United Kingdom and learned that when creating and deploying stateful applications on Kubernetes, they were primarily guided by factors such as flexibility (58%) and sustainability (52%). The key results of the survey are as follows:
- Growth of the company's net profit. According to IT experts, status-tracking applications on Kubernetes allow you to optimize development (54% of end users think) and scaling (55%). At the same time, 55% of developers claim that they now manage to conduct their activities more productively.
- Mandatory backup and recovery functions. Among the most important requirements for stateful applications on Kubernetes, developers named backup and recovery capabilities (55%), data mobility and capacity management (49%), and proper availability (48%).
- Mobility and data protection challenges. According to experts, the greatest difficulty in developing applications on Kubernetes is low data mobility (29%), and data protection (49%) remains the biggest problem after launch.
- Increasing service loads with status tracking. Most (87%) of the developers surveyed expect that the percentage of load on health-tracking services will increase over the next 12 months, while 9% of specialists think that it will remain the same, and only 4% predict a decrease in load for such services.
PX-Backup 2.1 will be available to users in November 2021.
