At the end of October 2021, Uber announced an agreement with Hertz, under which the taxi ordering service will receive 50 thousand Tesla cars. This deal is the largest expansion of the fleet of electric vehicles taxi aggregator in North America.
Hertz is already partnering with Uber, offering its drivers access to car rental, since many of them do not have their own cars, which they should use in collaboration with a taxi aggregator. On October 27, 2021, Uber announced in its blog that Hertz was going to lease 50 thousand Tesla electric vehicles to Uber drivers in the United States.
One of the world's largest deals marks another step towards Uber's goal of zero emissions. Indeed, according to the results of the summit on climate change, held by the UN Secretary General in September 2019, companies are striving to achieve net zero emissions no later than 2050, since this is necessary for the world to limit the worst impacts on climate change.
Hertz plans to make half of its newly ordered Tesla fleet available to Uber drivers as part of this new partnership. The program itself starts on November 1, 2021 in Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego and Washington, and first December 2021 the scheme will begin its distribution throughout the US state. Uber also announced a deal with Wallbox to begin installing charging stations to support the electric vehicle fleet.
Uber drivers will pay $334 a week to rent a Model 3 electric car, including insurance and maintenance. The company claims that over time, the cost will drop to $299 per week when the program expands. In the United States, there are more than 1 million Uber drivers and many of them rent out their cars. The company has already conducted several programs to help drivers gain access to electric vehicles for work, but this program is the largest.[1]
