2021: Moscow climbed 2 places in the ranking of the most resilient cities before global shocks

Moscow rose by 2 places in the ranking of the most resilient cities before global shocks. Digitalization helped the capital of Russia. We are talking about the Global Cities Index, which is calculated by the consulting company Kearney.

Analysts analyzed how cities were affected by the pandemic, its associated isolation, as well as the further process of recovery and adaptation to new conditions. Experts were able to name the most persistent, evaluating cities according to several criteria: business activity, human capital, information exchange, cultural experience and political activity.

In 2021, Moscow took 18th place in this ranking against 20th a year earlier. In total, the rating included 156 cities of the world, and it was headed by New York, London and Paris. Moscow was able to overtake such megacities as Madrid, Toronto, Dubai, Amsterdam, Frankfurt and Zurich.

Ranking of the most resilient cities before global shocks

The authors of the report assess, in particular, the success of cities in the development of the digital economy and advanced technologies, which, in the context of the pandemic, ensured a change in the position of cities in the ranking.

During the active phase of the pandemic in the spring of 2020, Moscow successfully used digital services and platforms, including digital public services for citizens and businesses, which are actively used even after lifting the main anti-pandemic restrictions.

There is also an improvement in the business climate in the capital, attracting investment, in addition, Moscow holds the first place in the world in the number of museums. Moscow took first place in the ranking in the development of the health sector and the number of university business incubators.

Moscow has been in the Global Cities Index rating since 2012 and has been in the top 20 for nine years. In 2021, the Russian capital was put on the first place in the development of the health sector and in the number of business incubators at universities.[1]
