2021: Receiving salary in bitcoins

In early November 2021, the elected mayor of New York, Eric Adams, announced that he would receive his first three salaries in bitcoins. He also noted that he planned to make his city the epicenter of the crypto industry in the country.

In New York, we always achieve great success, so I am going to get my first three salaries in bitcoins when I become mayor, "Adams wrote on his Twitter blog.

By similar actions, Adams tried to surpass Miami Mayor Francis Suarez, who in early November 2021 also said that he would next receive his salary "100% in bitcoins."

Startups, venture capital firms and crypto exchanges move to the city or open additional offices. Suarez also announced in February that Miami plans to accept tax payments in bitcoins and allow employees to receive salaries in cryptocurrency.

Statements by both Adams and Miami Mayor Francis Suarez were made in response to crypto investor and co-founder of Morgan Creek Digital Assets Anthony Pompliano, who wrote on Twitter:

Since Adams won the race for mayor of New York earlier this week, he has increasingly talked about adopting bitcoin and the broader cryptocurrency industry.

Adams said he created a research group that will carefully analyze all the factors that prevent the mass adoption of bitcoins in the city. It is important to understand that it does not allow digital currencies to develop and eliminate these problems. He also promised that New York would create its own urban cryptocurrency, following the example of MiamiCoin.

By November 2021, very strict rules for the exchange of cryptocurrencies in the United States were established in New York. In particular, a regulatory regime called BitLicense has been adopted. Citizens have the right to purchase and sell tokens only from licensed organizations.[1]
