2025: Russian doctors use optical tomograph for heart surgery for first time

For the first time, Russian doctors used an optical coherent tomograph during cardiac surgery. The operation took place in the medical institution "New Hospital" of the city of Yekaterinburg with the use of the only equipment of this class in the country. This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Health of the Sverdlovsk Region on June 20, 2025.

According to Medvestnik, innovative medical technology allows you to obtain high-precision images of the cardiovascular system in real time. The device helps specialists make more informed clinical decisions directly during surgery.

The patient was a 70-year-old resident of the Sverdlovsk region, who had previously undergone several cardiological operations. X-ray surgeons used new diagnostic equipment to assess the condition of arterial vessels, expand narrowed areas with a special balloon and install stents.

Tomographic device transmits light signal to artery by means of catheter and forms three-dimensional images of vascular wall with high resolution. The quality of the resulting images exceeds the standard angiography by ten times, which provides more detailed visualization of internal structures.

The obtained diagnostic information is processed using built-in artificial intelligence algorithms. The doctor is able to see the internal structure of the vessel during surgery, determine the degree of tissue damage, detect the presence of calcium deposits and assess the risk of rupture of atherosclerotic plaques.

Hospital specialists noted that the technique allows you to detect the smallest atherosclerotic formations that remain invisible in ordinary coronaroangiography. These microscopic plaques are able to provoke myocardial infarction or sudden cardiac arrest in patients.^[1]
