Customers: Russian Railways (RZD)

Moscow; Transport

Product: Baikal
Second product: Elbrus

Project date: 2021/11

At the end of November 2021, Russian Railways announced the purchase of 60 thousand personal computers based on the Russian Baikal and Elbrus processors. Deliveries will be carried out in 2021-2024, said Deputy General Director of the company Yevgeny Charkin.

According to him, the implementation of this project will not require state subsidies, but at the same time, the timing of the supply of equipment depends on the capabilities of manufacturers. The costs of purchasing computer equipment by the end of November 2021 are not disclosed.

It is assumed that this purchase of Russian Railways will be the largest transaction with equipment based on Russian chips and a indicative example of a large-scale supply of equipment based on Baikal and Elbrus chips not to the ministry or department, but to state-owned companies.

In addition, more than 90 thousand units of domestic telecommunications equipment are used in Russian Railways communications networks, providing technological and transportation processes, the deputy head of the state-owned company said.

He also cited data according to which the share of domestic server equipment for all Russian Railways computing centers continues to grow constantly, and it is 46% for high-performance servers and 28% for x86 servers.

I can say that in terms of operation and maintenance, no serious problems have been identified over the entire life of the equipment. All domestic server equipment operates under the control of Russian operating systems and virtualization systems, "said Evgeny Charkin.[1]
