Created the world's first casino with croupier robots and smart cameras

Customers: Resorts World Sentosa

Tourism, hotel and restaurant business

Contractors: SenseTime

Project date: 2021/11

On December 2, 2021, it became known about the creation of the world's first AI casino with croupier robots and cameras that can detect suspicious behavior. The project was implemented by the Chinese company SenseTime at the Resorts World Sentosa entertainment complex in Singapore. However, SenseTime faced technical difficulties and was forced to postpone the launch of the casino.

The casino is located on the island of Sentosa, which before the COVID-19 pandemic, this island was a magnet for rich players from around the world, but especially from mainland China. A comprehensive surveillance system will be able to track people throughout the casino resort, identifying them every time they move in front of a CCTV camera.

The former SenseTime officer explained that much attention was being paid to fraud prevention. The casino wanted to make sure that the staff "don't meet people they shouldn't meet and follow dealers to make sure they don't steal chips."

The company's system will SenseTime use gesture recognition to track the hands of dealers and customers and verify player wins. Another priority was to track players using facial recognition, both to blacklist customers whom the casino did not want to serve, and to understand how players behave inside the casino so that they could target more accurate promotions.

However, existing CCTV cameras in casinos did not produce high quality images, especially in poorly lit locations such as parking lots. In July 2020, Genting announced a partnership with Canon to provide the casino resort with new video surveillance cameras.

Another problem was that all casino staff wore uniforms, which prevented the system from finding a distinction between them. A more advanced part of the project, which involved replacing people dealers, was cars. Local officials in Macau said AI should be used only for security purposes, but lawyers said there were no special laws in Singapore to use this technology.

Sean Leong, a partner at Withers, an international law firm, explained that any use of AI would be governed by existing privacy laws:

In theory, casinos can use facial recognition technology or machine learning to monitor and monitor visitors to catch fraudsters. I think this is a pretty interesting use, the legality of which may still be under investigation.

SenseTime States that information security and data privacy are "top priorities." The company also said it uses the data for purposes explicitly authorized by customers, including identity checks, accounting and statistics.[1]
