In mid-December 2021, the results of studies of the connection between use e-cigarettes and erectile dysfunction appeared. As a result, it was revealed that one in five smokers of an e-cigarette revealed problems with potency.

Data from the 4th wave (2016-2018) of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health study in 2020 were analyzed. The study included male participants aged ≥20 who answered a question about erectile dysfunction. Multivariate logistic regression models examined the association of e-cigarette use with erectile dysfunction in the full sample and in the limited sample, adults aged 20-65 years without a previous diagnosis of cardiovascular disease adjusted for multiple risk factors.

One in five men who smoke e-cigarettes show problems with potency

Erectile dysfunction is an unpleasant condition that significantly impairs the quality of life of men around the world, defined as the inability to achieve and maintain an erection sufficient for satisfactory sexual intercourse. The proportion of erectile dysfunction ranged from 20.7% when fully sampled to 10.2% in limited. The prevalence of current e-cigarette use in the full and limited samples was 4.8% and 5.6%, respectively, with 2.1% and 2.5% reporting daily device use. In the full sample, the history of cardiovascular disease compared to absence, and the age of ≥65 years compared to the age of 20-24 years, were associated with erectile dysfunction. Whereas physical activity was associated with a lower probability of erectile dysfunction in both samples. E-cigarette use appears to be associated with erectile dysfunction regardless of age, cardiovascular disease, and other risk factors.

It is estimated that approximately 26 new cases with erectile dysfunction per 1,000 men occur annually in the world. Electronic nicotine delivery devices are considered less harmful than cigarettes and are widely advertised as a means of quitting smoking. In some countries, such as Belgium and the UK, e-cigarettes are used to treat smoking cessation. Studies have shown that nicotine found in combustible cigarettes is responsible for many physiological changes that contribute to erectile dysfunction. Device use is hypothesized to be associated with disease after adjusting for sociodemographic characteristics and other risk factors associated with the disorder.[1]
