2021: Device Launch

In mid-December 2021, a project called BusKill launched a special magnetic detachable cable that acts as a switch. The company introduced devices in the form of a USB cable with a magnetic attachment to block a personal computer or laptop, as well as to delete data when it is disconnected. The cost of this gadget is $59.

Journalists, activists and human rights activists face a constant struggle to keep files safe from the growing number of digital threats and various types of surveillance. But it is not easy to defend against physical attacks, be it an opportunistic thief-homemaker or an oppressive government. One end of the cable is connected through a magnetic connector to a special adapter that is inserted into a USB protected device, and the other end of the cable can be hooked to the user's hand using a carbine. The project has been developed BusKill since the end of 2019. The security device works with a special program, and its versions are available for Windows, macOS, Linux operating systems.

Released a BusKill device to instantly destroy a laptop when trying to steal

"Most people do not work with top-secret whistleblower documents and do not worry about the secret police knocking on their doors, but it is for this level of risk that I developed. BusKill And I wanted that it was available to journalists who optional use Linux and do not know how to use the interface of a command line", - the creator of the BusKill project Michael Altfield told.

BusKill is designed to lock the computer when it is physically separate from you, but Linux users can additionally configure the application to run a self-destruct command that scrambles the cryptographic keys of the device, making the computer data unavailable in just a few seconds.

Although Altfield said the BusKill was designed to take into account the interests of journalists and activists, the cable can also protect the computers of travelers on vacation and other high-risk users, such as cryptotraiders. The developers plans to make various triggers available for call, which are triggered in the system when the magnetic connector of the BusKill cable breaks.[1]
