Biography

2021: Appointment of Chief information officer

In mid-December 2021, for the first time in almost a year, the permanent head of the IT department appeared in the US Department of Defense. The Director of Information Technology, with the approval of the Senate, was John Sherman, a native of American intelligence.

Sherman served as information technology director from January 2021 until President Biden formally appointed him to the position in September, and Kelly Fletcher took over as information technology director while he waited for approval. Dana Dizi was the last to officially hold this post in a Senate-approved position before unseating her at the beginning of Biden's reign.

Sherman has a long career in the government and in the army. He is an Army veteran who later served in many senior IT positions in the government, including as Chief Deputy Director of Information Technology at the Pentagon before becoming Acting Director of Information Technology when the position became vacant. Before joining the Ministry of Defense, he was also the Chief information officer of the intelligence community.

Sherman holds the position of Chief information officer at a crucial moment when the leadership of the US Department of Defense focuses on the type of technology, which will be controlled by the office, in particular, we are talking about the transition of the Pentagon to a new version of Office 365 email and collaboration tools, called "DOD365," transition to the Zero Trust model, as well as integration of communication technologies related to Joint All Domain Command and Control (JADC2).

Managing the electromagnetic spectrum in the department headed by Sherman is likely to be one of the main priorities for the Chief information officer, as Fletcher, while in this post, stated that this issue took most of the time from her. The Sherman Division will also play a key role in assisting in the management of Joint Warfighter Cloud Capability (JWCC) development as the Department of Defense seeks to adopt a corporate cloud architecture.[1]
