2022: Nusantara - the new capital of Indonesia
On January 14, 2022, the new capital of Indonesia, which will appear in the southeast of the island of Kalimantan, it was decided to call Nusantara. This was stated by Minister of Planning and National Development Suharso Monoarfa at a government meeting on the issue of transferring the country's capital. It is assumed that Nusantara will become the capital of the country by 2024.
President of the Republic of Indonesia Joko Widodo announced plans to transfer the country's capital from Jakarta in 2019. However, due to the onset of the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19), the project was suspended. The new capital is one of Jokowi's priority infrastructure projects in Indonesia, as a catalyst for unlocking overall economic potential, stimulating growth, creating jobs and reducing poverty.
I received the confirmation and directive of the president, the new capital will be called Nusantara! Nusantara is an old Javanese term that literally means the outer islands, "said Suharso Monoarfa, Minister of National Development Planning. |
Indonesia allocated $35.8 million in the state budget for 2022 for the construction of the capital. The cost of the entire project is $35 billion. Actual construction may begin as early as 2022, after the approval by parliament of the bill on the capital. The state will finance 19% of the costs, and the rest of the investment should come from the private sector and public-private partnerships. The cost includes the construction of housing for about 1.5 million government employees.
Earlier, Suharso Monoarfa signed a decree on government plans for 2022, which includes eight strategic steps to accelerate the transformation of Kalimantan, including the construction of a new capital with supporting infrastructure. Other steps include accelerating investment, optimizing the development of commodity industries and increasing legal certainty regarding land ownership through the issuance of land title certificates.[1]
