Those accused of the death of 7 patients of the medical center from barium sulfate in St. Petersburg were released from the pre-trial detention center

At the end of September 2022, there was a turn in the case of four doctors at the consultative and diagnostic center in St. Petersburg (CDC No. 1), accused of patients from barium sulfate poisoning during GI X-rays. On February 4, 2022, it became known about the death of four more patients after a contrast examination of the stomach at the City Consultative and Diagnostic Center (GKDC) No. 1 of St. Petersburg. The total death toll reached four.

According to TASS, citing the press service of the Main Investigation Department of the Investigative Committee of Russia in St. Petersburg, the head of the radiation diagnostics department of the center was also detained as a suspect. By February 4, 2022, the issue of bringing charges against her and choosing a suppression measure is being resolved.

The official website of the GKDC does not indicate who heads the department of radiation diagnostics. Local media also did not name the suspect.

The UK clarified that a commercial structure has also been established, which supplied an industrial chemical drug to the institution instead of medical barium sulfate. The actions of the company's management will be given a legal assessment. Investigators seized the necessary items and documents, interrogations are being conducted.

A criminal case was initiated on the grounds of crimes provided for in part 3 of article 109 ("Causing death by negligence"), part 3 of article 238 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Provision of services that do not meet the requirements of the safety of life and health of consumers").

According to the investigation, the City Consultative and Diagnostic Center No. 1 for a long time provided medical services to the population with the use of an industrial chemical drug that is not included in the state register of medicines that does not meet the requirements of the safety of life and health of consumers.

Counterfeit barium kills three patients during contrast exam

On January 27, 2022, the territorial body of Roszdravnadzor in St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region announced the beginning of a check on the deaths of patients after a medical study of the stomach at the City Consultative and Diagnostic Center No. 1 in St. Petersburg.

On January 26, 2022, the Main Investigation Department of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation for St. Petersburg reported that two patients undergoing a medical study of the stomach on January 23 and 25, 2022 in one of the diagnostic centers located in the Vyborg district were taken to the hospital, where they died. Two more patients were hospitalized in serious condition. Subsequently, it became known about the third deceased, as well as three more people in intensive care.

According to the St. Petersburg branch of Komsomolskaya Pravda, among the dead were a 60-year-old woman, as well as a 42-year-old and 46-year-old man. They were radiographed with contrast.

The Ren TV channel, referring to informed sources, writes about several versions of what happened. It is assumed that during the examination, poor-quality barium (contrast medium for X-ray) was used, or it was poorly diluted before use. According to another version, patients could be given another drug.

On the fact of the incident, a criminal case was initiated on causing death by negligence. The maximum punishment that threatens to be guilty is four years in prison. Investigators and criminologists seized documentation and various items, and also appointed the necessary examinations.[2][3][4][5]
