Moscow signed a contract for the analysis of wastewater from schools for drugs

On February 15, 2022, the Directorate for Ensuring the Activities of State Institutions of the Department of Science and Education of Moscow signed a contract with the Skolkovsky Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech) in the amount of 42.4 million rubles. The contractor will have to analyze 300 Moscow schools, special schools and colleges, located in the center to located in Zelenograd, Troitsk and Kotlovka, for the content of narcotic substances in wastewater.

In particular, checks are expected in the repeatedly recognized best educational institutions of the capital, including Lyceum No. 1535 and school No. 1518.

According to RBC with reference to the terms of the contract, Skoltech will have to conduct a waste water analysis "in order to determine the presence of substances to be controlled in the Russian Federation." Work will begin no later than 10 working days from the date of conclusion of the contract. Samples will be collected every school day until October 31, 2022. If narcotic substances are found in the obtained samples, the customer will have to conduct an additional check in an independent laboratory.

It is noted that the results of the studies will be summarized in order to build a rating of well-being, identify the most common substances to be controlled, their relative content, as well as if, on behalf of the customer, several trips to one object were carried out, time dependencies of the type and relative content of substances to be controlled are investigated at these objects.

In 2020, the rules for testing students for drugs were changed. The main innovation was the notification of their parents about the test results. Prior to this, medical secrecy extended to the results of adolescents aged 15 years.[1]
