2022: Recall of defective devices leading to burns
On March 2, 2022, Fitbit announced the recall of its Ionic smartwatch due to the danger of a burn. According to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), about 1 million devices were sold nationwide and about 693 thousand abroad. The company stated:
Customer security is always Fitbit's top priority, and for reasons of caution, we conduct a voluntary recall of Fitbit Ionic smartwatches. We have received a very limited number of injury reports - the total number indicated in the CPSC message is less than 0.01% of devices sold - about battery overheating in Fitbit Ionic smartwatches, which is a burn hazard. Such cases are very rare, and this voluntary recall does not affect other smartwatches or Fitbit devices |
According to the company, the Fitbit Ionic smartwatch contains a battery that can overheat, which creates a burn hazard. CPSC reported that Fitbit received "at least 115 reports in the US (and 59 reports abroad) of battery overheating in hours, with 78 reports of burn injuries in the US, including two reports of third-degree burns and four reports of second-degree burns (and 40 reports of burn injuries abroad)."
According to CPSC, only Ionic devices with model number FB503 (the model number can be found on the back of the device next to the strap mount) fall under feedback and only in the following colors:
- Ionic FB503CPBU - Spline Blue/Burnt Orange
- Ionic FB503GYBK - coal/smoky grey
- Ionic FB503WTGY - blue-gray/silver gray
- Ionic FB503WTNV - Adidas version, ink blue and ice gray/silver gray
CPSC recommends immediately discontinuing their use and contacting Fitbit. When Fitbit receives the watch, the consumer will receive a refund of $299 and a 40% discount code for the next Fitbit purchase.[1]
