2022: Suspended sentence for theft of cancer drugs

On March 22, 2022, a meeting of the Kirovsky District Court of St. Petersburg was held, during which the former nurse of the oncologic dispensary Marina Smirnova was found guilty of crimes in three episodes under article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (Fraud). The results of the court session were told by the Joint Press Service of the city courts.

As part of the process, it was established and proved that Marina Smirnova, being in collusion with employees of various medical institutions, stole expensive medicines from the City Clinical Oncology Clinic. The drugs were intended for the treatment of patients of the oncological chemotherapy department.

A nurse in St. Petersburg received a sentence for stealing cancer drugs for 11.5 million rubles

Thefts occurred from November 2019 to October 2020, and the total amount of damage amounted to about 11.5 million rubles. The woman fully admitted her guilt - a pre-trial cooperation agreement was concluded with her.

She received 3.5 years in prison with a probation period of 3 years.

The suspects in the case of the theft of oncopreparations in St. Petersburg are 16 people. The alleged organizer of the criminal group, 52-year-old Petersburger Sergey Voitovich bought expensive medicines stolen from medical institutions. He then reintroduced them through pharmacies and private clinics, which resold them to regional health institutions as part of public procurement.

It was reported that the cost of drugs stolen over five years exceeds 100 million rubles. The investigation estimated the weekly turnover of the criminal group at 100 thousand rubles, the doctors included in the organized crime group received 10% of the market value of the drugs sold.

Earlier, the prosecutor's office of St. Petersburg also approved the accusation of another oncologic dispensary nurse, she is suspected of fraud with drugs for 2 million rubles.[1]
