Google News is a free news aggregator that is provided and managed by Google Inc. The service was created in 2002 and is in beta testing for three years until 2006 and serves to select the most up-to-date news from thousands of publications around the world.
2022: Restricted access in Russia
In Russia, access to the News.Google service was limited, reported March 24, 2022 in Roskomnadzor.
Based on the requirement of the Prosecutor General's Office of Russia, Roskomnadzor limited access to the News.Google Internet service in the country. The mentioned American news Internet resource provided access to numerous publications and materials containing unreliable socially significant information about the progress of a special military operation in Ukraine,[1] agency said in a statement[2]. |
We confirmed that some people have difficulties accessing the Google News application and website in Russia, and that this is not due to any technical problems on our part, "Google commented in a statement[3]. |
Google added that they "worked hard" to ensure that the information service remained available in Russia for as long as possible.
The service was not included in the register of news aggregators of Roskomnadzor. Data on the total audience on computer and mobile versions that the company provided "do not meet the established criteria" for daily attendance (more than 1 million users), the agency reported in 2017.[4]
