2022: Creating a Digital Neck Double
At the end of March 2022, St. Petersburg State Electrotechnical University "LETI" named after V.I. Ulyanova (Lenin) announced the creation of a digital double neck for effective planning of thyroid operations.
The development contains 80 anatomical structures of the neck, including the musculoskeletal system, organs and fascia, obtained using magnetic resonance and computed tomographs. The development was created software SolidWorks using and HyperMesh. Materials modeling and finite element analysis were performed using Abaqus CAE software. For clarity and convenience, the digital model has a visual interface.
It is claimed that the virtual model, the accuracy of which will be finalized, already gives 81.3% coincidence with the results obtained during the operation on corpse material.
According to the creators of the technology, virtual anthropomorphic models will study the structure and functioning of the human body instead of traditional methods based on the study of cadaveric materials. Moreover, new digitalization and visualization technologies carry more information. There is already progress in the study of neck biomechanics through digital models, but LETI decided to contribute due to open questions about the correctness and accuracy of the available data.
With this model, we can quantify the effectiveness of a particular thyroid surgery, we can understand what risks exist for the occurrence of defects in surgery.
