2022: An implant has entered the market to help splice the damaged spine

At the end of February 2022, Intelligent Implants, specializing in medical technologies, introduced the spinal implant SmartFuse TLIF. device is intended for improvement of bone healing and reduction of non-fusion frequency after operation on vertebral connection. The implant is equipped with electrodes that are designed to enhance bone growth, as well as to monitor bone healing, and the technology itself can have potential in areas other than the spine.

As of February 2022, spinal injuries account for about 13% of all cases of musculoskeletal damage among patients of all ages. The most common type of spinal injury is the contusion of the soft tissues of the spine. Often patients ignore such injuries, considering them not serious. However, without proper treatment, such an injury can lead to chronic diseases, and pain can last for years.

SmartFuse TLIF is a wireless-enabled active implant technology that uses an array of electrodes to stimulate, control and monitor bone growth. The system consists of an implant providing local electrical stimulation to accelerate bone growth, an external wearable device for wireless power supply and communication with the implant. The device is connected to a cloud portal to which medical personnel and an application have access to use the patients themselves.

The SmartFuse Cloud system allows the doctor to access the data in real time. Medical personnel can monitor patient compliance and system status. Overall, Intelligent Implants can provide the surgeon with an unprecedented insight into the patient's postoperative period, including the extent of his healing. SmartFuse TLIF can increase the amount of bone fusion by 3 times, as well as improve quality over standard, unsymulated controls in patients.[1]
