2023: Development of a system for monitoring MSW disposal facilities using ALS and AI

Geoskan has developed an information system for the Russian environmental operator to monitor MSW placement facilities using ALS and AI. Geoskan announced this on April 11, 2024. The system is designed to ensure control over the operation of MSW infrastructure facilities, to identify violations in MSW handling in Russia, to predict and prevent dangerous situations. Data for the information system is collected using unmanned aircraft systems, including in automatic mode using drone ports.

The processing module data is designed to cleverly search for violations of the operating conditions of MSW landfills algorithms using deep neural networks. ones. The solution allows you to automatically record more than 10 types of violations, such as the absence of fencing of the landfill along the perimeter, checkpoint, gate or barrier, the absence of disinfection structures, transport weight control, the presence of smolders and fires, the presence of birds at the landfills with establishing their number, etc. The system supports visualization of collected data and automatically generates evaluations.

To collect data and train the system, Geoskan conducted a comprehensive survey with ALS 101 landfills in 6 federal districts for REO, including 20 landfills in the annexed territories of the Russian Federation. The survey included aerial photography, aerial laser scanning, thermal imaging. At some landfills, the composition of substances released into the atmosphere was analyzed. Based on the data collected, more than 850 violations have already been identified.

The most complex project that we implemented in 2023 for REO is of an intersectoral nature and is at the junction of several advanced technological solutions at once. A software and hardware complex using unmanned aircraft systems, drone ports, data analysis using artificial intelligence is a complex and most technological solution, "commented Pavel Stepanov, General Director of Geoskan Moscow.

The project provides for automatic control of an unmanned aircraft, as well as the ability to plan one-time or regular routes using drone ports. Unmanned systems with drone ports already function at two training grounds: KPO Sever in the Moscow region and the MAG-1 solid waste landfill in the Nizhny Novgorod region.

Since 2022, PPK REO has been implementing a project to monitor the state of MSW accommodation facilities using ALS. During this time, 582 MSW facilities were studied in 68 constituent entities of the Russian Federation, 597 digital counterparts of facilities were built and more than 3.8 thousand certificates of violations of current legislation were identified, classified into 23 types of violations. By the end of 2024, it is planned to examine at least 400 more MSW handling facilities in [Russia] using ALS. The results of the flights will be uploaded to the system to assess the residual capacity and service life of MSW facilities, - said Aleksei Burov, Deputy General Director for Digitalization of REO PPK.
