Device Announcement

In early April 2022, Baxter released a device for 24-hour replacement renal therapy ST Set. The device filters blood more slowly than standard hemodialysis machines, this more sparing, round-the-clock therapy is usually intended for patients hospitalized with acute kidney injury who cannot withstand three-hour sessions of conventional dialysis.

The one-time ST Set mimics many kidney functions for patients with severe cases of acute renal injury, in which a decrease in organ function caused by illness, injury or infection leads to a potentially fatal accumulation of toxins and fluid in the bloodstream. The system remains outside the body, where blood is filtered and passes through the semipermeable AN69 membrane from Baxter. As blood passes through the filter, toxin ions interact with the membrane, trapping foreign material on the surface of the filter.

{{quote 'The ST Set was instrumental in increasing the availability of continuous renal replacement kits that were in high demand during the COVID-19 pandemic. Permission received from the FDA will help expand access for patients with acute kidney injury, said Reaz Rasul, general manager of drug delivery and emergency therapy at Baxter. }} The immediate causes of acute kidney damage are the low volumetric velocity of blood flow, acute destruction of the glomerulus with the loss of bringing and carrying arteries and glomerular capillaries, damage to the tubules of nephrons or impaired urinary outflow from the kidney due to obstruction. The ST Set is designed to connect to Baxter's PrisMax or Prismaflex control units, which are trolley systems equipped with monitors to provide real-time tracking. This function is necessary for other types of operations in the intensive care unit.[1]
