The ATK consulting group completed system implementation of the business analysis of QlikView in one of the leading Russian networks of retail, Kopeyka Trading House.

At the moment – the Kopeyka Trading House is one of the largest national retail networks consisting of more than 600 supermarkets in 196 cities of 25 regions. The company develops very dynamically, works more than with 700 Russian and foreign suppliers and totals 10,000 employees.

Prerequisites of the Project

Before implementation of QlikView for obtaining analytical information and the reporting of TD "Kopek" used several operational systems which are not connected among themselves. It caused a number of difficulties. First, the speed of creation of reports in the operational systems extremely low that at dynamic retail business threatens with acceptance of "outdated" management decisions. Secondly, users needed information covering data at once of several operational systems, and without specialized BI tools to consolidate such information quickly and it was qualitatively impossible. Plus to everything discrepancies in results of the reports constructed using different mechanisms or in the different operational systems were sometimes observed. From the technical point of view, there was a strong need to unload the operational systems from execution of analytical requests and creation of the reporting.

Choice of the BI solution

"The choice of a BI system was for us the significant business project therefore the decision was made taking into account a large number of criteria. At the same time two factors – high-speed performance and quality of the data provided to the end user were the most critical. Certainly, we took into account also such indicators as the implementation speed, profit ratio of investments, total cost of ownership. Finally we aimed to select a system which will be able effectively to work with data bulks, allowing us not only to carry out monitoring of activity and to build the corporate reporting, but also to develop efficient solutions and forecasts, to manage risks and to improve quality of business processes. Generally, we delivered a level for the BI solution high", - Artyukhov Alexander, the director of the department of information technologies of TD "Kopek" comments.

When choosing BI- systems, TD "Kopek" the aspiration to support the aggressive growth of the company was the main objective for, having increased justification of acceptance of management decisions based on operational and qualitative information. Alexander Obolensky, the head of group BI, told that the management selected from three systems of the business analysis – QlikView 9 SAP BW and IBM Cognos 8 BI. As a result, a choice was made in advantage QlikView.

"In QlikView us speed of providing data, price-quality ratio and dates of receipt of the first results very much attracted. The in-memory technology and an associative data model do storage and information processing very simple, and it just what is necessary during the work with large volumes of data. Besides use QlikView allowed to avoid creation of the intermediate data warehouse at this stage that helped us to save time and finance", - reported Mikhalin Boris, the head of department BI TD "Kopek".

Implementation framework

At the moment using QlikView in TD "Kopek" the analytical reporting of three departments – marketing, finance and logistics is automated. Thus, the most critical tasks concerning a business intelligence are already implemented, about 30 data models are created.

"As TD Kopek is the company big, the specifics of the BI project were in satisfying the maximum quantity of customer requirements to a system. During QlikView implementation we had to consider and formalize requirements of different departments, Regional Directorates, different users. It was very laborious work which allowed to use optimum resources of our developers and specialists of ATK consulting group company and to receive excellent result", - Boris Mikhalin, the head of department of BI TD "Kopek" tells.

Total quantity of users of information: about 100 employees.

Amounts of data in TD "Kopek":

  • in SAP – the 15th terabyte of data,
  • in Gestori in 2 months about 150 gigabytes collect,
  • lines of accounting entries – about 3 billion lines.

Information sources integrated into QlikView (more than 80 data sources):

  • applications: SAP (the main transaction system, two key circuits – FI, MM), Gestori (a storage system on cash vouchers), a logistics control system, URRE (unified register of a real estate), Financial base IFRS of accounting
  • БД: Oracle 10, Progress, SQL Server, Access, Excel

Plans for further deployment and use of QlikView

At the moment in TD "Kopek" the task to raise degree of justification of acceptance of management decisions at the level of an average link of management is set. Respectively, now broadcast of examination per the analysis of business information to an average link of management for acceptance of management decisions on the basis of reliable information obtained from QlikView becomes a key step for the company. Also it is going to expand both work of Regional Directorates with QlikView, and functionality of a system. So far QlikView covers only the most critical business areas (finance, marketing, sales, logistics), but its potential is not exhausted by it. Further using QlikView of TD "Kopek" is going to satisfy analytical requirements of such serious directions as personnel management, security services, operation and IT.

Project Effect

  • Reduction of time of the answer to a query of the user for 98.6%
  • Reduction of term of development of reports for 65 – 70%
  • Basic decrease in IT costs. Earlier a large number of people – developer specialists of SAP of different qualification was engaged in development and support of reports. Now the same functions are performed by department of BI which at the moment consists of 4 people.

Now we do not study the fixed reports, and we carry out the interactive analysis of the visualized information. Work of our employees from routine data processing turned into the intellectual analysis. Now they use that time which earlier our employees spent on obtaining information from different sources on a full-fledged analytical work which advances the company to strategic objectives. And it means that, having selected QlikView, we really made the right decision!"


Boris Mikhalin, head of department of BI TD "Kopeyka": "QlikView implementation – not our first initiative connected with automation of analytics. However QlikView helped us to integrate all data in one system, to create a common information space for a full-fledged analytical work. At the same time interactive multi-user work on data analysis is conducted in QlikView very actively. I did not even think that for our amount of data, and it is more 15th terabyte, such information processing rate is possible"
