2022: Installation and Implementation of RSC Tornado AFS Intelligent Storage System

Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) To Dubna In, the installation and implementation of PCK Storage Systems (Storage) RSC Tornado super-high density developed by AFS specialists began (it allows 1 to store petabyte (PB) information in each node with a height of 1U). This was reported by the RSK Company on April 18, 2022. In total, as part of this stage of the planned modernization of computing capacity and storage, which began at the end of 2021 in the Laboratory (LIT information technology JINR), 8 RSC Data Storage Tornado AFS nodes with a total capacity of 8 PB are put into operation.

The RSC Tornado AFS solution based on x86 architecture processors and 32 solid-state drives (30 terabytes each) with a high-speed NVMe interface in the EDSFFE1.L form factor (the so-called "long roll") is designed to create high-density storage systems of the All-Flash class. The intelligent RSC Tornado AFS allows you to store up to 1 PB of information in each 1U node. It implements 100% liquid cooling in hot water mode with a high low power consumption (PUE) of 1.04. In Storageon-Demand RSC layered software-defined storage systems, this solution is designed for a layer of "warm" data.

The RSK Group is actively developing and promoting its own Software Defined Storage (SDS) solutions. As a major Russian manufacturer of supercomputers and storage systems, we are interested not only in maintaining the domestic market for high-performance computing and storage, but also in its development. In 2022, in a difficult situation, we continue to fulfill current contracts and make every effort to fulfill obligations to our customers,
emphasized Alexey Shmelev, executive director of the RSK.

This stage of upgrading the Govorun supercomputer allows you to increase the storage segment responsible for working with warm data several times, which will increase the overall storage performance several times. This, in turn, will lead to faster calculations and a reduction in the time for solving scientific problems by 5-8 times. The presence of a "warm layer" of storage facilities will make it possible to implement calculations and carry out research projects even more efficiently in the network of NICS, combining collective use centers (CCP) - the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, St. Petersburg Polytechnic University Peter the Great (SPbPU) and the Interdepartmental Supercomputer Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences (JSCC RAS),
explained Dmitry Podgayny, head of the LIT sector of the JINR.
