Biography

2022: Assumed the position of Director of Digital and AI at the Pentagon

On April 25, 2022, the Ministry of Defense USA announced that ex-head of department machine learning Lyft Craig Martell was appointed as the first ever director of digital technology and artificial intelligence. Pentagon

Craig Martell will head the US Department of Defense's General Directorate of Digital Technology and Artificial Intelligence, which was created in December 2021 to centralize oversight of data and artificial intelligence initiatives as part of a single management at the Pentagon. Martell will report directly to US Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks.

The Main Directorate for Digital Technologies and Artificial Intelligence (AI) began its work with limited operational capabilities in February 2022 and is expected to reach full operational readiness by the end of June 2022. It is reported by the publication FedScoop. Martell will oversee the work of the Pentagon's digital service and the units of the chief data specialist, as well as the Joint AI Center, which was transferred to him by the Pentagon's chief information specialist.

Craig Martell held key positions in AI and machine learning at Dropbox and LinkedIn. Martell has experience in the US military due to the fact that he was a professor of computer science at the Naval Graduate School, where he specialized in natural language processing.

Martell will work with Margaret Pamieri, who was appointed Pentagon deputy chief digital and artificial intelligence officer in March 2022. Palmieri previously worked as a special assistant to the deputy chief of naval operations, and also founded and headed the Office of Digital Combat Operations of the US Navy.[1]
