2022: Ex-head physician of the hospital in the Jewish Autonomous Region received a term due to the death of a patient

In March 2022, the Birobidzhan District Court of the Jewish Autonomous Region (EAO) sentenced Konstantin Gasilenko, the former chief physician of the regional hospital in Birobidzhan, who was accused of negligence (part 2 of article 293 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation), which led to death.

According to the press service of the prosecutor's office of the Jewish Autonomous Region, in September 2017, an elderly man fell on the street and received a closed head injury. The victim was taken to the regional hospital of Birobidzhan. During the examination, the man was denied hospitalization. After re-contacting the hospital, he was hospitalized, but the injury was not diagnosed in a timely manner, which led to the death of the man.

According to the investigation, the chief physician of the hospital, who at that time was Konstantin Gasilenko, was repeatedly informed by the patient's son that the patient was being improperly provided with medical care. However, the head physician did not organize control over the provision of high-quality medical care to the patient by the attending physician. In addition, they did not ensure the proper work of the X-ray department for conducting computed tomography to patients, the EAO prosecutor's office said.

By a court verdict, Konstantin Gasilenko was sentenced to 3 years in prison conditionally with deprivation of the right to hold leadership positions for a period of two years.

The regional hospital of Birobidzhan - by March 2022, one of the largest in the Far East, has a 24-hour hospital for 444 beds and a day for 84 beds. The medical institution employs 993 people, of which 66 doctors have the highest certification qualifications. 5.5 thousand operations are carried out in a medical facility per year. The hospital is also the teaching base of the Far Eastern Medical University and Birobidzhan Medical College.^[1]
