2022: Samsung Electronics to deliver $1 billion worth of 5G equipment

On May 3, 2022, the American telecom operator Dish chose Samsung to supply 5G network solutions as part of a multi-year deal worth more than $1 billion. In a joint statement, the company explained that the multi-year deal provides for Samsung to supply Dish Wireless with its Open RAN standard solutions for the deployment of the operator's 5G network. These solutions include 5G and RAN hardware, virtualized RAN software, and Open RAN radio devices, including radios with massive MIMO.

{{quote 'Samsung 5G solutions will play an important role in expanding our network, giving us flexibility in deploying our cloud network with software solutions that support advanced services and operational scalability, "said John Swiringa, President and Chief Operating Officer of DISH Wireless. }}

In addition, the partnership between Dish and Samsung also includes the sale of smartphones and 5G devices for retail customers. Dish Wireless is at the deadline set by the U.S. government. Dish told US regulators that it plans to provide coverage for 20% of the US population by mid-2022 and 70% by 2023.

The company claims to be building the first virtualized 5G broadband network with open RAN in the United States. She also put together a large list of partners to help build her 5G network. The largest and most influential of them is Amazon, which will place the Dish Wireless network in the AWS cloud. Nokia, Intel, Qualcomm, MTI, VMware, Fujitsu, Mavenir, Altiostar, Matrixx Software, Ciena's Blue Planet, Hansen Technologies, DigitalRoute, Palo Alto Networks and Netcracker also work with the operator.

This is Samsung's second largest deal in the United States for the supply of network equipment. In 2020, the company won a contract worth $6.6 billion from the American operator Verizon for the supply of equipment for 4G and 5G networks. Dish Wireless will continue to use the Samsung Galaxy S22 smartphone for network testing and plans to use this manufacturer's devices as a reference platform throughout the deployment process.[1]
