2022: Augmented Reality Output for Helicopter Production and Operation

On May 19, 2022, the Moscow Aviation Institute (MAI) announced the creation of an augmented reality (AR) system designed to increase the efficiency of development and production, as well as the operation of helicopters.

The technology allows you to display interactive instructions before looking and superimpose them on complex equipment and units, perform audio and video fixation of work, with 3D models displayed in real space, evaluate design solutions in full-scale viewing and connect remote experts with the possibility of online interactive advice and consultations on the necessary equipment.

The model of the fuel system will help designers evaluate the accuracy of the products being developed and visually check the dimensions and layout solutions, and the model of the installation of the accident-resistant fuel system - clearly demonstrate its capabilities and acquaint personnel with high-tech equipment before starting its operation.

As Dmitry Sukhanov, head of the AR/VR Center of Competencies for Energy Systems, noted, earlier either layout from chipboard and other improvised means was used to visualize the product, or prototypes were created from metals, which requires additional large time, resource and material costs. Augmented reality technology allows you to implement the process much more efficiently, he said.

Sukhanov also noted another plus AR-system - the ability to demonstrate various large-sized products without the need for their physical movement. This will help manufacturers to clearly demonstrate and present their products on a full scale without logistical and associated costs, he explained.

At an exhibition in Moscow, MAI presented a virtual model of the Ka-226 helicopter fuel system with fuselage elements, a description and the ability to look inside and see its device[1]
