2022: Open OS Project Announcement

China announced on July 1, 2022, the creation of an open platform to accelerate the development of its own operating system for desktop computers, which is another attempt to eliminate the country's dependence on foreign systems such as Windows and macOS.

The openKylin platform was developed by a group of Chinese companies led by China Electronics Corp (CEC), the country's largest state-owned group of integrated electronic information enterprises. Other participants include the China Cyber Disaster Response Team in Industrial Control Systems, Kylin Software and more than 10 other software companies.

The Communist Party of China revealed the source code of the OS to make it a real replacement for Windows

The openKylin platform will allow more developers to participate in the development and implementation of innovative domestic open source operating systems, CEC reports.

National operating systems serve as an important pillar for building new infrastructure and accelerating the digital economy, said Chen Ximing, deputy director general of CEC.

OpenKylin aims to build a professional community of open source software developers with global influence, attracting developers from around the world, he added.

The Chinese software operating systems industry continues to be dominated by foreign brands such as Windows from, Microsoft Android from Google , and Mac OS from. Apple

The search for a competitive domestic operating system has been underway in China for several decades, and some candidates are already available in the market. Kylin was originally created by the National Defense Technology University of the People's Liberation Army, which has licensed Kylin Software for commercial applications since 2014.

The company Kylin Software already offers three operating systems: V10, V4 and NeoKylin V7.0. Among them, the V10 was configured to be compatible with the widest range of processors, including Huawei from Technologies Co's HiSilicon,,, Loongson Sunway Hygon and FeiTeng.
