2022: Announcement of a service for designing 3D models of individual implants

In July 2022, it became known about the creation in Russia of a service for the design of 3D models of individual implants. We are talking about the development of the Novosibirsk State Technical University NETI.

University scientists have created software that allows you to design individual three-dimensional implants for people with bone tissue defects, for example, in revision endoprosthesis, trepanation defects of the skull. It is argued that before in the Russian Federation there was no such software that combines the functionality necessary for doctors and engineers. In addition, the software simplifies the interaction between the patient, doctor and engineer.

A service for designing 3D models of individual implants has been developed in Novosibirsk

As Alexander Grif, head of development, junior researcher at the Research Laboratory for Modeling and Data Processing of Knowledge-Intensive Technologies at NSTU NETI, explained, the exchange of information about the patient, including computed tomography data, technical assignment for design, medical leaflets, etc., takes place in a digital environment. The software performs, in particular, strength calculation of implants, and also has additional capabilities for converting computed tomography data, for example, a skull with a defect.

To model implants, the patient's computed tomography data collected by doctors is used, with the help of which engineers create an individual three-dimensional bone model with a defect area, which allows determining the location of the implant. Then the model is transferred to the engineering center, where the implant is printed with titanium on a 3D printer or cast in molds with the Recost-M material. The finished product is transferred to doctors to correct the bone defect.

Registration of a patent for software is scheduled for July 2022. For medical organizations in Russia, the online service will be free.[1]
