2022: Start 3D printing biodegradable clothing and shoes made of liquid cellulose
In early July 2022, it became known that Simplifyber began printing 3D printer on biodegradable clothes and shoes made of liquid cellulose. To make their products, experts startup pour liquid cellulose into one 3D printing plate. The output is a completely finished T-shirt or sneakers. Finished products are biodegradable and the entire process reduces waste.
Unlike cutting and sewing, in which fabric waste is inevitable, Simplifyber's system uses exactly the amount of material that is needed. If the material is colored, the dye can be added while the material is in a liquid state, which saves water. And when the life of the material comes to an end, it can be recycled into clothing again.
The material is made from a mixture of wood cellulose and other plants and biodegradable additives. The manufacturing process is similar to paper production, but the resulting material is strong and durable, and by changing the composition and thickness of the mixture, certain characteristics can be achieved for the fabric. Company-wide, according to the founders of the start-up Simplifyber, the process can produce as much in a day as a traditional factory produces in a month. The team believes up to a third of all production can be replaced.
{{quote 'Most of the strength of our bonds is provided by an ingredient derived from food waste - it creates an effect known as crosslinking, creating bonds at the molecular level. When wet, the strength of our materials is about 94% higher than in dry. We design differently, in 3D and shapes are printed in 3D. Then we pour our liquid suspension into these forms, which eventually becomes a fabric-like material, "said Simplifyber co-founder and CEO Maria Intscher-Owrang. }}
On July 7, 2022, Simplifyber announced an initial round of funding of $3.5 million led by At One Ventures. As the company begins to partner with brands, the first product in the form of sneakers, may hit the market as early as 2023.[1]
