2022: Announcement of the Wi-Fi 7 router
On July 8, 2022, the Chinese company H3C released, as it claims, the first Wi-Fi 7 [router] on the market, Magic BE18000. At the same time, at the time of the announcement of the product, the Wi-Fi Alliance has not yet approved the standards for the next generation protocol.
According to the product description, Magic BE18000 uses the latest Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be) wireless protocol technology, using the 6 GHz band and supporting a maximum bandwidth of 320 MHz, providing a wireless speed of 18443 Mbps, the wireless speed in the 2.4 GHz band is increased to 1148 Mbps, in the 5 GHz band - 5765 Mbps, in the 6 GHz band - up to 11530 Mbps.
Unlike Wi-Fi 7, the current Wi-Fi 6E has a bandwidth of up to 160 MHz with a maximum download speed of 9.6 Gbps. The higher the value, the more devices the router can support and the more quickly the user can stream and play without being throttled due to the simultaneous presence of a large number of users.
Magic BE18000 also uses the new Multi-Link Operation (MLO) technology. MLO allows one connection between the device and the router to use several bands at once (2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, 6 GHz) and channels. The greatest impact of MLO is on operational efficiency, allowing the router to switch between channels based on workload to provide a stable, low-latency connection.
However, even if the router meets the Wi-Fi 7 standards that have yet to be approved, the benefits of using Wi-Fi 7 will not be available without other devices also operating under this standard. Nevertheless, in terms of marketing, this is a good move.
Wi-Fi 7 devices are expected to arrive in larger numbers in 2023. Semiconductor makers Qualcomm, Broadcom and Mediatek announced their own Wi-Fi 7 technologies in early 2022. Companies are starting to integrate the technology into next-generation devices, and the Wi-Fi Alliance is expected to set a new standard for Wi-Fi 7 before the end of 2022.[1]
