Population

According to the head of the city administration Konstantin Ivashchenko, as of August 2022, at least 200 thousand people live in the city. In 2021, the population was approximately 450 thousand.

Housing stock

At the beginning of the special military operation of Russia in Mariupol , there were 2700 apartment buildings and 48000 private households. According to according to local authorities, as of August 2022, at least 60-70% of the housing stock received destruction, of which 15-20% cannot be restored.

This assessment is confirmed by the results of the survey announced at a briefing by the construction department of the Ministry of Construction of the DPR Sergei Fedyushin. Then 359 residential buildings were examined: of which 47 houses were not subject to restoration, 156 were destroyed by 30-70% and required major repairs, and 156 houses had a degree of damage not exceeding 30%.

If these figures are correct, then more than 40% of the total number of apartment buildings in the city has been completely or partially destroyed. Another 30% are not so significantly damaged, and only 30% do not need major repairs or reconstruction.

The assessment of destruction in the private sector has not been fully carried out. Many blocks of one-story development adjacent to the city center were destroyed to the ground.

History

2022: Battle of Mariupol

By the beginning of Russia's special military operation in Ukraine, the forces of the Southern Military District were actually divided into two: one part of these forces was deployed in the Crimea and was preparing to march towards Kherson and Melitopol. The other - entered the territory of the DPR through Rostov-on-Don on the night of February 23, 2022 and was supposed to connect with the forces entering from the Crimea as soon as possible.

By the end of March 2, the 8th Army, together with the 1st DPR AK, which entered it, occupies the village of Old Crimea. So the battle began, which in terms of tension and the ratio of forces and means exceeded the similar operation of 1943 - the battle for Mariupol.

For more than 70 years, the city has grown to a large size: for battles for each building on University Street and Prospekt Mira, it was necessary to allocate personnel up to a battalion. The commander's headache in the city was the lack of regular assault units capable of effectively clearing the urban agglomeration. Taking into account the above, Mordvichev decides not to enter through the industrialized Kalmius region, but to go through the central and western regions of the city, thus cutting off the enemy's defenses in the industrial zone in two.

On March 28, in the Martin massif, units of the 8th Army joined the 22AK forces. By the beginning of April, realizing that the front rolled back more than 100 km from the city, the marines of the Armed Forces of Ukraine from the plant named after Ilyich make an attempt to exit and break through to Azovstal with battles, but the Russian army does not greatly interfere with them: the enemy simply does not know that he has already been cut off from the coast in the Primorsky region and now begin to "dry": the loop has dragged on. Voluntarily leaving the Kalmius region, the enemy deprived himself of room for maneuver and was forced to stand up in a positional defense, which ultimately led to a natural result - complete defeat and surrender.
