Cyprus will purchase Israeli Iron Dome missile defense systems for its National Guard after approval from the country's Defense Ministry. The corresponding agreement was signed by official representatives of both states, according to The Jerusalem Post in August 2022.
The media note that the Iron Dome is a welcome addition to the arsenal of the National Guard, since its range will allow Cyprus to protect its airspace in all necessary areas. In particular, the complex will be able to be used as air defense and means of protection against a potential threat from Turkish drones. The newspaper called the Iron Dome the best system of its kind available today, citing its effectiveness during recent rocket attacks in the Gaza Strip.
In early March 2022, the head of the Cyprus National Guard, Lieutenant General Demokritos Zervakis, visited Israel as a guest of IDF Chief of Staff Aviv Kohavi. During his visit, Zervakis visited the border with Lebanon and examined the battery of the Iron Dome.
This is not the first time the two countries have cooperated in the military sphere. In June 2022, the Cypriot authorities concluded an agreement with Israel on the supply of personal protective systems for the Cypriot military. We are talking about personal protective systems and tactical wearable systems from Source, as well as tactical wearable systems Marom Dolphin.
In addition, in May, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) conducted joint exercises with the forces of the National Guard of Cyprus, which imitated the war in the depths of Lebanon against the Hezbollah group.
Israeli Defense Minister Beni Gantz thanked Cyprus for receiving the IDF and participating in the exercise, saying it "illustrates the strength of the strategic alliance" between the two states.[1]
