On August 29, 2022, GoTo Gojek Tokopedia (GoTo), the largest Indonesian technology company, entered the cryptocurrency market by purchasing the local Kripto Maksima Koin crypto exchange. The company says the acquisition is driven by an intention to diversify its services.

According to Reuters, GoTo acquired a 100% stake in Kripto Maksima Koin, paying 124.84 billion Indonesian rupees ($8.38 million), citing a statement by Indonesia's stock exchange regulator.

We believe blockchain technology can play a leading role in the future of finance, GoTo said in a statement. The company, however, did not announce its future plans for the acquired crypto exchange.

The technology company, formed by the merger of taxi ride-hailing app Gojek and e-commerce platform Tokopedia in 2021, raised more than $1 billion in an IPO in April 2022 and claims to contribute more than 2% to Indonesia's GDP of $1 trillion. The company wants to become a "hub for diverse money management," it said.

Kripto Maksima is one of 25 crypto exchanges registered with the Indonesian Commodity Futures Trading Regulatory Agency, known as Bappebti. In early August 2022, the regulator stopped issuing new registration certificates for cryptocurrency firms in order to make trading activities "transparent, effective and effective," Tech in Asia reports, citing a Bappebti statement.

Cryptocurrencies are gaining popularity in the largest economy in Southeast Asia: the total volume of transactions with crypto assets in 2021 grew by more than 1000% - to 859.4 trillion Indonesian rupees ($57.70 billion) compared to 2020, according to the government department.[1][2]
