2022: Sentence court - death penalty for bribes

On September 22, 2022, a court in Changchun city sentenced former Chinese Justice Minister Fu Zhenghua, convicted of corruption, to death on corruption charges. The 67-year-old ex-minister confessed to taking bribes worth over 117 million yuan ($16.50 million).

According to RIA Novosti, citing China Central Television, the court found that the official used his official position to receive bribes for personal gain, patronized individuals in doing business, and "hid evidence of the alleged grave crimes of his younger brother."

Fu Zhenghua sentenced to death for bribery suspended for two years

According to prosecutors, Fu Zhenghua used his official position all the time from 2005 to 2021, when he held high positions. According to law enforcement agencies, he was also a like-minded former Deputy Minister of Public Security of the People's Republic of China Sun Lijun, who in April 2020 was also under investigation on corruption charges and is now awaiting sentencing. In early 2022, Sun Lijun publicly confessed to conspiring with law enforcement officials to enrich himself personally.

It is noted that Fu Zhenghua pleaded guilty and repented, and also returned illegally acquired funds. The court ruled that after a two-year stay, the death sentence could be commuted to life in prison without parole.[1]
