2022: Intraperitoneal ruler announcement to simplify hernia surgery
In Russia, an intraperitoneal line was created to simplify the operation of hernias. This is the development of the Russian National Research Medical University named after Pirogov, the press service of the university said at the end of September 2022.
The difficulty of operating on hernias in the abdominal cavity is not only to remove them. It is important to accurately measure, carve and install a mesh prosthesis on the hernial gate of exactly the size that a specific patient needs. If the mesh is larger than needed, the patient will at least experience discomfort. If less, a hernia recurrence or grid displacement is possible. This can lead to extrusion and adhesion.
According to the Russian National Research Medical University named after Pirogov, by September 2022, surgeons are forced to resort to artisanal methods of measuring hernia sizes. According to current international recommendations, it is necessary to measure a hernial defect from the inside of the abdominal cavity. In addition to measuring your own hernial defect, this should also be done for the cavity in order to implant the mesh that is obtained during dissection.
Developed at the Russian National Research Medical University named after Pirogov, a special ruler will be introduced into the abdominal cavity through the trocar using a laparoscopic instrument. Director of the Research Institute of Clinical Surgery Alexander Vyacheslavovich Sazhin noted that the device will help improve the process of operations.
Analogues of the device already exist and are used in medical practice abroad. In Russia, there were no such developments until this moment - scientists of the Russian National Research Medical University named after N.I. Pirogov made a successful import substitution. By the end of September 2022, Russian scientists are patenting the invention. In Russia, there were no such developments until that moment.[1]
