Russian scientific research institute of traumatology and orthopedics of Vreden (RNIITO), federal state institution

The name of R.R. Vreden is entered to the Gold book of history of medicine as founder of our operational orthopedics. Its vital motto: "It is only worth living when you work and if not to work, then to you it is not necessary and to live".

Opening of Orthopedic institute took place on August 8, 1906. In addition to the director, in staff of institute at the time of opening there were a senior and three junior assistants, two consultants, mechanics, the master, the supply manager, the housekeeper-linen keeper, the clerk (he is a treasurer and the accountant), nurses. Almost housing at institute was provided to all of them.

According to the Charter consisting of 68 paragraphs, treatment of patients and improvement of doctors of specialists was a main objective of activity of institute. The new institute on the scale and the equipment exceeding all similar organizations which were available at that time in the world had to serve as a sample of orthopedic clinics of Russia. The first patients were accepted on August 14, 1906. Soon the number of places in a hospital was increased from 40 to 70. Among patients of institute persons with tubercular damages of a backbone and joints, congenital defects, sluggish paralyzes, effects of injuries prevailed. Mainly bloodless methods of treatment applied at that time could not satisfy R.R. Vreden who had wide experience of assistance to wounded in the Russian-Japanese war. He by right can be considered the ancestor of operational orthopedics in our country.

From first years works of Orthopedic institute at it were performed such surgical interventions as arthrotomy, an artroplastika, artrodez, tendinous and bone plastics, an osteotomiya, open reposition of dislocations and so forth. The famous German orthopedist Albert Goffa who visited institute in 1907 gave appreciation to the work which is carried out in it. On memoirs of the surgeons assisting it R.R. Vreden operated quietly, slowly and at the same time quickly, without excess movements and vanity, with the exact, calculated acceptances on the basis of a well thought-out plan of transaction and scrupulous knowledge of anatomy. He liked to repeat that the school provides correctness of operating, and talent - success of transaction.

Now RNIITO im. R. R. Vredena Rosmedtekhnology Federal State Institution is the largest in the country medical institution of this profile. 830 beds function (the chapter the doctor - Lavrentyev V. A.). The institute locates well equipped medical and diagnostic divisions and laboratories. Here too departments of traumatology, orthopedics and field surgery of the St. Petersburg State medical university of the academician I.P. Pavlov work (the manager. - prof. N.V. Kornilov.) and MAPO (manager. - professor V.A. Neverov). Among the staff of institute there are 91 candidates of medical sciences and 20 doctors of medical sciences, from them 12 professors.
