2022: Digital Sign Language Avatar Announcement

At the end of October 2022, the Novosibirsk State Technical University (NSTU) NETI announced the creation of the first digital sign language translation avatar in Russia. The program includes more than 5 thousand gestures used by deaf and hard of hearing people.

According to the developers, this is a cloud technology, it works on the basis of machine learning and neural networks, integrates into various operating systems and will work on the Internet and on most smartphones.

The first digital sign language avatar in Russia was created in Novosibirsk

At the beginning of 2022, they are going to introduce the technology of sign language translation into the educational process of NSTU, and later withdraw it for widespread and, importantly, free use.

{{quote 'The government of the Novosibirsk region pays great attention to creating conditions for the deaf and hard of hearing, and the avatar can be effectively used in the health care system of the region, education, public services, - the deputy head of the region Irina Manuilova assessed the development of scientists. }} It is assumed that the animated sign language avatar will be used by large IT companies, banking and financial, as well as government agencies, while the technology will be free for the deaf. In 2023, it is planned to work out the technology for translating from Russian sign language into Chinese.

President of the All-Russian Society of the Deaf Stanislav Ivanov confirmed the readiness of VOG in the status of a qualified customer to support the project and bring to every deaf person that there are such technologies.

{{quote 'They will begin to be introduced into the field of health care, education, employment, applied in everyday communication - this will make our life easier. We have been cooperating with RATM Holding and NSTU for a long time, we are asked how to make the product in demand. }}

The development of translation into Russian sign language and recording of all signs was carried out on the basis of the NSTU laboratory, created at the expense of the federal program "Priority 2030."[1]
