2022: Announcement

In early November 2022, it became known that Saudi Arabia smart windows using sunlight for distribution were created in. Wi-FiInternet The system is designed King Abdullah University of Science and Technology in and uses so-called two-element liquid crystal gates.

Smart windows quickly change the polarity of the sunlight passing through them and can be used in sheet glass windows in large rooms, such as offices. A Saudi team has created a less energy-intensive alternative that can use modulated sunlight instead of traditional Wi-Fi. Changes in polarity back and forth serve the same purpose as 1 and 0 in binary code, and, according to the developers, are not perceived by the human eye.

The tests showed smart windows could be detected and decoded by smartphone cameras, the researchers said. In contrast, changes in the intensity of artificial light used in some other proposed systems can be visually perceived as an unpleasant flickering effect if the frequency of changes is too low.

{{quote 'We are now ordering the necessary hardware to create a shared system update! We would like to increase the data transfer rate from Kbps to Mbps and even Gbps, "said lead author Basem Shihada. }} According to scientists, this amount can be provided by a small solar battery. Of course, the system will only work in the light of the sun, so it can be used to save energy during the day, and Wi-Fi can be turned on after sunset. Scientists' calculations show that the system for November 2022 can transmit data at a speed of 16 Kbps.[1]
