2022: SSD Announcement
In mid-December 2022, Tesla introduced its own solid state drive (SSD), designed to be used primarily with the company's on-board infotainment system for electric vehicles.
On December 13, 2022, Tesla released a Holiday Update for its cars, which, among other things, brings support for games available on the Steam platform. A new SSD is designed to store such games, as well as other files. The device has a capacity of 1 TB. It is said to belong to the "automotive class," that is, it withstands extreme temperatures, is not afraid of shocks and vibration. The package includes a connecting cable USB Type-A - USB Type-C.
Owners of restyled Model X and Model S electric cars, which are equipped with a powerful on-board computer with an AMD Ryzen processor (graphics accelerator based on the RDNA2 architecture) and 16 GB of RAM, will be able to run games stored on the drive. Gameplay can be displayed on a 17 ″ center display or an 8 ″ screen for rear passengers. Wireless controller management is supported.
The Tesla drive will go on sale in February 2023 at an estimated price of $350. This is significantly more than other portable SSDs with a capacity of 1 TB, which are already on the market. For example, the Crucial X6 1TB Portable USB 3.2 SSD and Crucial X8 1TB Portable USB 3.2 SSD cost $70 and $80, respectively, the Samsung T7 Shield 1TB Portable USB 3.2 SSD will cost $90, and the SanDisk 1TB Extreme Portable USB 3.2 SSD will cost $100. Moreover, these products are also not afraid of shaking and can work in a wide temperature range. At the same time, the new Tesla stands out for its stylish design and bears the name of Elon Musk on the case.[1][2]
