2023: Announcement of a car with electronic film changing colors

On January 4, 2023, BMW presented the i Vision Dee car. One of its features is a fully customizable appearance that the owner will be able to change at his discretion - for example, depending on the mood or time of day.

The secret of i Vision Dee is the use of E Ink Prism 3 film covering body panels. This material is capable of reproducing 32 colors. For the new BMW car, the entire outer surface is divided into 240 zones, the color of which can be controlled independently of each other. Thus, you can create an almost unlimited number of design options. At the same time, switching between different colors takes only a few seconds.

E Ink technology assumes that power is consumed only when the image is redrawn. Therefore, BMW i Vision Dee does not require much energy to maintain the system: it can be generated, for example, by a solar battery. It is noted that BMW engineers had to adapt E Ink technology for curved surfaces, develop new electronic controls and laser cutting processes to create the exterior of the machine. Prism 3 film can be used in other interactive areas - in the field of advertising, to create unique interior solutions, etc.
