2023: System shutdown due to cyber attack

On January 9, 2023, DNV announced that its information infrastructure had been subjected to a cyber attack. Because of this, the ShipManager system, which is used to control ships and fleets, had to be disabled.

ShipManager is specialized software for shipping companies. It serves to intelligently and efficiently manage a modern fleet, be it several ships or hundreds of ships. A solution based on a comprehensive approach can provide the information necessary to improve efficiency, reduce operating costs and remain competitive in the marine market. ShipManager uses a modular architecture: components are available for crew control, security control, shipment planning and repair, etc.

DNV shut down its main system due to cyber attack

It is reported that an attack on ShipManager servers was recorded on January 7, 2022. To avoid serious consequences, it was decided to completely disable the system. DNV experts have asked for help from IT security partners to investigate the incident and implement a technical recovery plan. In addition, law enforcement agencies were notified of the incident.

All customers can still use the onboard and offline features of the ShipManager software. At this point, there is no indication that any other software or DNV data is affected, the company said in an official notice.

It is not yet clear whether the incident is related to the ransomware attack - DNV does not give comments on this issue. The company only notes that often the purpose of attackers is not to obtain a ransom, but to steal confidential information or to disrupt the work of services in order to "create chaos."[1]
