On December 22, 2022, it became known that researchers at the University of California, San Diego (USA) have developed a special patch that allows you to continuously track signs of possible development of malignant formations through the skin.

The proposed technology is based on detection of accumulations of hemoglobin molecules. The fact is that biomolecules in the body can be used to monitor health conditions, as well as to analyze the results of certain types of treatment. For example, the amount and location of hemoglobin is key to determining the degree of perfusion of various tissues and organs and assessing blood accumulation in the relevant region. Hypoperfusion is a potential cause of severe organ dysfunction and often occurs in myocardial infarction, vascular diseases of the extremities or after transplantation. Conversely, blood stagnation is observed in some types of cancer, injuries or inflammation.

Cancer Detection Patch

The patch developed by the researchers to continuously track signs of cancer contains surface-emitting vertical resonator lasers (VCSELs) and various ultrasound transducers. All elements are placed on a single substrate based on an elastomeric matrix. Laser diodes generate pulses that penetrate living tissues to a depth of 2 cm. These pulses excite hemoglobin molecules, creating acoustic waves that are recorded by transducers and then processed. Based on the data obtained, we can conclude about the risk of malignant tumor formation.

The patch has high mechanical strength and does not create discomfort when worn. In this case, the laser diodes operate at a wavelength of 850 nm. By changing this indicator, other biomarkers can be recorded to track specific diseases.[1]
